Thanks everyone. The site in question is D5.
The attraction of News is that a busy, non-technical site admin can
create content (e.g. Story nodes) and then aggregate them easily into
an email message of teasers on a regular basis ... as a newsletter. It
integrates everything nicely into the site with very little extra work
for the site admin.
With Simplenews this can all be done, but with a lot of document
creation on the part of the user, manually copying teaser content and
creating links to story nodes. This is all stuff which is done for
free by drupal core. So that was the attraction of News.
However, if it is orphaned I will not want to recommend it.
I will check out Mass Contact.
