I think it depends on the T-shirt, personally. My shirt from Drupalcamp
2007 never got worn again after that weekend, but the one from last year
has seen quite a lot of wear.
The reason for that is that last year's shirts were, in my opinion at
least, much better - stretchy, comfortable, and more gender-neutral, in
the sense that the stretchier fabric made them more adaptable to a
female body. Plus the fact that they were black and white rather than
blue meant they went with pretty much anything and everything.
Most T-shirts at tech events (including Drupalcamp 2007) are made for
men, and while this might seem trivial given that the majority of
attendees at most tech events (including Drupalcamp) are men, if
T-shirts are an indirect source of sponsorship money, increasing the
number of people who are actually likely to wear them is probably a plus.
That said, I'm by no means attached to getting a T-shirt, gender-neutral
or otherwise. My comments were more directed toward getting more benefit
out of the T-shirts if we do need to have them to meet sponsor
expectations.
Moving back to sponsorship and related issues, my business is sadly not
in a position to be a sponsor, as it's barely supporting me at the
moment. But I'd be willing to volunteer to help out at or before the event.
