[DUG-TO] mysql config on osx

Hi,
I'm on macosx and have a sql error:
ERROR 1153 (08S01) at line 437: Got a packet bigger than
'max_allowed_packet' bytes

The culprit is cache_menu. I emptied the cache first in admin/permissions,
and it's still in the dump.

I'm not a guru at the command line, my mac user doesn't have root
permissions, and I'm kind of stuck.

So far I tried:
$ mysql --max_allowed_packet=32M
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using
password: NO)

And to create a my.cnf, but I don't have write permissions to the directory,
even as sudo.

I'm just trying to add some pages to my site! I'd be grateful for help.
