Hey DUG-TOers,

If you are interested in helping NGOs run campaigns
online, I would like to invite you to a code sprint on Sunday, March
28th in Toronto. While we are gathering to dig into some code, it will also be a great chance to meet and work with your fellow Drupalists, talk shop, compare notes, eat, drink and play some foosball.
You can register here for the 'Developer' event:
http://connect-toronto.eventbrite.com

Make
Poverty History worked with Ottawa Drupal shop openconcept.ca to
develop open source tools for online advocacy. The Connect module
(drupal.org/project/connect) allows supporters to send messages to
their Member of Parliament (based on postal code) or sign petitions
through the makepovertyhistory.ca Drupal site. Now we would like to
share this software with other organizations in Canada.

We are holding a code sprint on Sunday, Feb 28th to get people acquainted with the code and make some improvements to the module.

The day will look like this:

- 10 am start: Intro to the Connect Module
- Intro to a prioritized list of improvements to the code
- Dividing into teams to tackle the new/improved features
- Online participation welcome - register for more info at http://connect-toronto.eventbrite.com

We
will have a list of prioritized improvements to the code, provided by
the end users of the software: online campaigners from across Canada.
We will learn about these improvements, then team up to tackle these
challenges over the course of the day. The code sprint will be held at
the Centre for Social Innovation (215 Spadina Ave., Toronto) but you
can participate remotely - sign up here: http://connect-toronto.eventbrite.com/

We are looking for the following roles:
- Drupal developers
- Data experts, to connect to various datasets: Federal MPs, Toronto ward data, provincial data
- CiviCRM developers, to ensure the code integrates seamlessly
- CSS magicians to make it all look really nice
- People who love doing end-user documentation (they do exist)

Tech
details will be supported by the developers of the module
(openconcept.ca) and James Walker (of DUG TO and Lullabot) will be
helping on-site with the sprint. Check out the D6 version online
(drupal.org/project/connect) to get a sense of what we are working
with. The goal of the weekend is to share this innovative open source
software with more organizations in Canada, and to introduce the
technology to a wider community of developers.

If all of the above
doesn't tweak your fancy, perhaps the free (good) food, drink and foosball will entice you to come. Register here for a 'Developer' ticket, and invite anyone you think would contribute to this event:

For those of you who are interested in how to use the code in online campaigns, we have an event on the day before introducing it to online campaigners. You are welcome to join that if you want to really learn more.

Questions? Comments? Please get in touch with me at eric[at]makepovertyhistory.ca

Thanks, hope to see you on the 28th,

Eric.
