[DUG-TO] DUG-TO Digest, Vol 52, Issue 11

I've been pleased with RimuHosting's VPS's out of Dallas. They have good
support and uptime. My only worry is they charge me too little--I'm worried
they'll go broke only charging $40/hour for extra support beyond the amazing
free stuff they do. I have a semi-dedicated plan (1 dedicated CPU with
burstable up to 7 more) with a bunch of low volume sites, and another client
on a different vps.
An iWeb colo is working well for one client but their support can be slow
and expensive.
I've had troubles with CanadaWebHosting uptime in the past, and with
pleasant but not always technically competent support.
I'm looking at changing to a model where clients get their own VPS directly
from somewhere like linode or rimu in order to not be responsible for uptime
and support for things lower down on the stack.
I'm still trying to figure out the best model for outsourcing monitoring and
response to soft alerts regarding load etc so that my clients get great
service even when I'm offline every weekend.
I know provisioning and installing is not hosting, but here is some info if
it does come up tonight. I'm working with DharmaTech on adapting and
extending their semi-automated provisioning system that rolls out a
consistent LAMP image, sets up a pretty good generic Drupal profile (about
80 modules) and a generic CiviCRM configuration. They're finding some
difficulties with their Selenium component of this, since it is slow and
occasionally times out.
I've looked at using Aegir (again, not hosting, I know, but ease of
automated upgrading of multiple sites can be relevant to hosting), but
haven't played with it recently.
HTH. Would love it if some notes were made of the discussion and posted.
Cheers,
